REMEMBERING GRACE
by Howell Conant
LIFE; 2008; 160 pages
ISBN: 9781603200394
After Princess Grace of Monaco died, family friend and LIFE photographer Howell Conant put together a book that was entitled "Remembering Grace". It featured many of the photographs that he had taken of Grace Kelly, beginning in 1955 on the set of her penultimate film The Swan and going through her years as Princess of Monaco. He took the royal family's family portraits every year and also many personal shoots over the years.
In 2008, they brought it out in book form and I purchased it sight-unseen. It arrived and I was slightly disappointed. The quality of the book is great and the pages are nice and white and the binding is firm. However, it is rather small for a photo book. This should have been the coffee table variety. Every other LIFE book of photos is always over-sized and the photos are nice and large. This is a beautiful book, but is a bit of a letdown because of the diminutive size. Why LIFE chose to release it in miniature - who knows? But, it is still a nice place to get a lot of Princess Grace photos. Over the last couple years since I bought this, I have found it in two other forms. A large coffee table book entitled "Grace" and published by Random House. The size is nice, but some of the photos lack the clearness in printing. I also found a LIFE magazine version of "Remembering Grace". It is the same as the small book, just normal magazine size and is probably my favorite version. Of course, it won't last up like the book, but it makes up for the size and the printing is very comparable.
